Letter to the Times, sent but not published, Wed 13th April 2011
Sir,
Your tuition fee cartoon makes no sense (p11, Tues 12th). It shows a man holding a piece of paper saying: “All unis charge £9000 tuition”. However, as the first sentence of your report on the same page explains, only two thirds of English universities have been given permission to charge that much.
Your cartoon man says: “I’m rubbish at economics but isn’t that a cartel?” Is ‘NB’ suggesting that, whenever competing firms set the same prices, it proves they’ve made a secret, illegal deal? If so, should I be worried that The Times, Telegraph, Guardian and Independent all cost £1.00?
